Data of approximately 70K individuals taken in WRDSB cyber attack

The Waterloo Region District School Board has provided an update on the impacts of this summer's cyber attack. 

Back in July, the public school board was notified that hackers had unlawfully accessed a restricted network drive. 

Last month, the public board confirmed sensitive personal data relating to past-and-current employees was accessed — including names and banking information.

At the time, it was said some student information was also accessed, but the scope wasn't known. 

On Thursday, the board announced that the data involved information from some students enrolled from the 2006-2007 to 2012-2013 academic years. 

While the main student information system was not targeted through the intrusion, the data of approximately 70,000 individuals was taken. 

The board said financial information and social insurance numbers weren't accessible in the database, but it is offering one year of complimentary credit monitoring to anyone impacted as a precaution.

Waterloo Regional Police confirmed last week they were in the process of investigating the cyber incident.
