Survey shows well-being among Cambridge youth lower than rest of region

The latest data from the 2021 Youth Impact Survey is painting a telling tale for youth in Cambridge.

The survey polled 1,074 youth in the region, between the ages of nine and 18, and grouped them depending on where they lived. Each of the three tri-cities had their own group, while the townships were grouped together.

Breaking it down, 39.2 per cent surveyed live in Waterloo, 32.1 per cent in Kitchener, 17.4 per cent in Cambridge and 11.4 per cent in one of the townships.

The survey asked about youth satisfaction in 11 different categories, on a wide range of things, from mental health, the feeling of support from family and friends, the satisfaction with the environment around them and more.

In nine of 11 categories, Cambridge youth scored the lowest compared to their counterparts.

For example, 58 per cent of Cambridge youth felt supported by their friends. Waterloo was next on the list at 71.4 per cent.

About 54.5 per cent in Cambridge felt a sense of belonging in their community, and about half of those living in either Cambridge or Kitchener felt negatively about their own mental health.

You can see the full survey breakdown on the Children and Youth Planning Table website.
