2022 PGA Tour Canada Championship to be played in Kitchener

By Mark Pare

Professional golf is coming back to the region.

The 2022 PGA Tour Canada Championship will be hosted by Deer Ridge Golf Club in Kitchener September 12-18.

“We were approached a couple years ago, and actually had agreed to do it last year, but the tour did not run its schedule based on COVID,” said Rob Moore, the director of golf and operations at Deer Ridge.

He said not a lot of outside events are held at the club, and a poll of members overwhelmingly showed favour to hosting the event.

It's estimated the region will see an economic impact of between $2-million and $4-million.

Four children's charities will also benefit from the tournament: Waterloo Region Track 3 Ski School, Pride Stables, Independent Living Centre of Waterloo Region and Nutrition for Learning.

“I think it'll be great for the community,” Moore said. “I know this community does support events. They say that when the LPGA was at Whistle Bear and Grey Silo (Golf Club in Waterloo), it was the best attended event on the LPGA Tour.”

It's not the first time Deer Ridge and the PGA have worked together.

When the Whistle Bear Golf Club in Cambridge hosted the event on the Nationwide Tour in the mid-2000's, Deer Ridge held a qualifier.

But now, the big event will take centre stage at Deer Ridge, with 60 golfers in the field competing for a spot on the 2023 Korn Ferry Tour

Over the coming months, officials will be looking to gather a team of volunteers, with that call going out in April.

Between 200 and 250 volunteers will be needed.

There's also a Waterloo Region health care workers “thank you day” being planned ahead of time.

More details have yet to be released, including a title sponsor.
