Region’s COVID vaccine booking system to reopen this weekend

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

The Region of Waterloo will reopen its booking system for the COVID-19 vaccine on Saturday, October 30.

It's in anticipation of Health Canada approving the vaccine for children aged 5 to 11 sometime this fall and that more groups will become eligible for a third dose.

On Friday, The National Advisory Committee on Immunization has expanded eligibility guidelines for booster shots of COVID-19 vaccines.

The committee now recommends mRNA boosters to people who received two doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine, adults over the age of 70, front-line health-care workers with a short interval between their first two doses, and people from First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities.

As of Monday, November 1, residents will need to have an appointment to get a second or third dose of vaccine at a Waterloo Region vaccination clinic.

Those who still need a first dose don't need an appointment and can walk into any regional clinic.

Residents can find out which groups currently qualify for a third dose on the Region of Waterloo website: regionofwaterloo.ca/ThirdDose

Vaccines continue to be available from some family physicians for their patients and at some pharmacies.
