Province providing funds for display bins to promote Ontario fruit

By Blair Adams

The provincial government wants to make it easier for consumers to identify locally grown fruit when they are out shopping.

On Thursday, the province announced over $867,000 so the Ontario Tender Fruit Growers can buy 7,000 new branded display bins for that purpose.

The announcement was made in Kitchener by Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, Lisa Thompson.

“Ontario’s tender fruit growers represent a very important part of our agriculture sector. In any year, they work hard to grow top-quality fruits; in a challenging time like now, it is especially important that we support their efforts to get the most out of each season,” Thompson said.

“By choosing to buy local food, Ontarians are helping our farmers to continue providing the good, healthy food that nourishes our families and keeps Ontario’s agri-food supply chain strong.”

The chair of the Ontario Tender Fruit Growers calls the bins “crucial” to their marketing success.

“We greatly appreciate this funding and our partnership with Foodland Ontario in promoting local fruit to consumers.” added Phil Tregunno.
