City of Kitchener running backyard homes design competition

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

If you are thinking of putting a tiny home in your backyard, the City of Kitchener wants you to get creative.

It has launched the Backyard Homes Design Competition. The city wants you to tell the story of who the home is being built for.

City council gave the okay for tiny homes to be built, if certain criteria are met, earlier this spring. An option they hope helps address the affordable housing issue.

“We’re looking for creative ideas from the community. We invite architects, students, engineers, planners, designers, thinkers, companies, organizations and everyone interested in the mission of the competition to submit their creative backyard home ideas.” Adam Clark, urban designer with the city, said in a release.

Entries will be expected to follow the city’s zoning criteria and consider user experience, affordability and sustainability while delivering high quality architecture and urban design.

Winning submissions could win up to $2,500. They will be accepted up until midnight on August 20.

More information about the competition can be found at www.engagewr.ca/backyardhomes.
