Region reports 50 new COVID cases Tuesday

Region of Waterloo Public Health reported 50 new COVID cases on Tuesday, bringing the overall total to 17,139.

Hospitalizations remain stable at 57 people being treated for the virus — 21 are in intensive care.

The active caseload is down by 8 to 522.

Over 75 per cent of adults in the region have received at least one dose of the vaccine, which works out to over 467,000 doses. More than 91,000 residents (20.16 per cent) have been fully vaccinated.

Here are some other updates from the region's dashboard: 

  • 3,567 cases have screened positive for variants of concern – 3,070 are the Alpha variant (first found in U.K.) – 11 are linked to the Beta variant (first detected in South Africa) – 116 are linked to the Delta strain (first located in India) – 61 are linked to the Gamma variant (first found in Brazil) – 309 cases where a mutation has been detected
  • No new deaths were reported Tuesday, leaving the local death toll at 260
  • 16,331 resolved cases (95 per cent)
  • Over 511,100 tests have been done

There are currently 18 active outbreaks in the region. 11 are in workplaces:

  • NEW Grand River Hospital – adult inpatient mental health unit 
  • NEW Kaljas Home (1 case)
  • NEW Congregate Setting 43 (1 case)
  • NEW Congregate Setting 44 (1 case)
  • NEW Construction 16 (2 cases)
  • NEW Trades & Related Service 16 (2 cases)
  • NEW Food Processing 10 (5 cases)
  • Retail 12 (5 cases)
  • Home Childcare Centre 4 (3 cases)
  • Retail 11 (2 cases)
  • Automobile sales & services 8 (2 cases)
  • General office setting 14 (8 cases)
  • Health services – Chiropody (2 cases)
  • Trade and related services 15 (2 cases)
  • Food and beverage services 19 (4 cases)
  • Trades and related services 14 (4 cases)
  • The Village of Winston Park long-term care (6 cases in residents, 4 in staff)
  • Congregate setting 42 – multiple locations (104 cases)
     

Meantime, the province reported 296 cases on Tuesday.

  • 9,082 deaths (60 new)
  • 16,784 tests completed Monday — 15.75 million since January 15, 2020
