Region adds more COVID-19 vaccine appointments after demand bogs direct booking system (update)

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

Waterloo Region today rolled out a self-serve booking service for getting a COVID-19 vaccine shot, and it appears it was a bit too popular out of the gate.

The site was down for a period of time this morning due to heavy traffic.

The region says it is now back up and running.

That being said, it is asking for patience, due to longer wait times because of the high interest.

Complaints of wait times over an hour have flooded social media throughout the day, along with claims of scarce appointments once those eligible finally got through.

Public health added more appointments in the afternoon in order to accommodate some of the demand, and said more appointments would be added throughout the week.

They sent the following tips to 570 News:

1.    Once you are able to book, check other locations if your preferred clinic does not have availability.
2.    Anyone 12-17 years old must book their appointment at a clinic that is offering the Pfizer vaccine. Check online by clicking here.
3.    If you have previously submitted a request to rebook but do not have an appointment you can book your appointment now.
4.    All clinics that are listed on the booking site, are open to anyone who is currently eligible, including the school locations.
5.    Confirmation texts/emails may be delayed due to the high volume. We are working with our vendors on a solution.
6.    Reminder: If you're looking to get your first dose, walk-in spots are also now available at select clinics – no appointment needed. Check out the list of clinics and hours by clicking here
