A local manufacturer of personal protective equipment is the recipient of a pair of industry leadership awards for its response to COVID-19.

The Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) – Large Manufacturer Award and the Ultimate COVID Hero Award were presented to The Canadian Shield by industry news media publications Canadian Manufacturing Daily, as well as PLANT and EP&T Magazine, at a virtual awards gala on Thursday.

The awards recognize Canadian companies, and their achievements as they joined the fight against the pandemic in March, which included making PPE to protect frontline workers, and developing products to assist the sick.

The Canadian Shield, founded out of education technology company InkSmith, pivoted its operations in March to address the shortage of personal protective equipment for healthcare workers.

The company is now one of the largest PPE manufacturers in the country.

Since receiving approval from Health Canada in March, The Canadian Shield has made over 16 million of its face shields for frontline and essential workers across Canada.

“This is an important milestone on our path to building a world leading Canadian medical device design and manufacturing organization,” Jeremy Hedges, President of The Canadian Shield said in a release. “We're honoured to be recognized alongside other industry leaders that took on COVID as we celebrate excellence in Canadian manufacturing, and I'm proud of our team who all share in this national recognition.”
