The CEO of the Women's Trucking Federation of Canada drives for Sharp Transportation in Cambridge and was filmed delivering donated hand sanitizer to B.C. recently.
Shelley Uvanile-Hesch is one of many truckers being featured, and tells 570 NEWS that the producers of “Haulin' Hope” wanted to celebrate the frontline heroes.
Uvanile-Hesch operated the cameras herself using a remote control, as the current pandmic restrictions prevented the camera crew from joining her in the cab.
The producers say it was an experiment in remote documentary filming.
Her truck – Destiny Star – features pictures of women in the trucking industry in Canada on the side of the truck. She says just 3.5 per cent of the 300-thousand truckers in Canada are women.
She says they are actively trying to recruit more women.
The Ballinran Entertainment produced doc also shares Uvanile-Hesch's very personal story of losing her husband, who was also a trucker. He died in a local workplace accident in 2019.
The doc is expected to be released by early July.
