Council to discuss environmental report on Riverside Dam

The Riverside Dam will be receiving a makeover in the future and Cambridge City Council will be meeting Tuesday evening to discuss the new environmental report.

The city had decided back in March to rebuild the dam, however they had yet to do an environmental assessment as required by the province.

The decision to rebuild was based on the importance of the dam to the surrounding areas as a historical fixture of the park.

“It was really important to the people of Preston and not just Preston, but beyond that this was a very important park and the dam was an important structure in that park” said Donna Reid, one of the city councillors heading to tonight’s meeting.

The new report considers many factors the city will have to contend with in rebuilding.

Among them include flooding and passage of fish, to public safety and social use.

Possible alternatives to the dam were included in the report such as naturalizing the river and constructing in-stream rock structures.

The total cost of rebuilding has been estimated at $5.4 million.

After receiving approval on the restoration, there will be a 60-day review period where residents can provide their input.
