Don Cameron Potato Night set for January 29th

Quasi-retirement be damned, Don Cameron can’t seem to stay away from the Kitchener Rangers.

“I stepped aside — I didn’t retire — and I haven’t missed a Ranger game yet this year,” Cameron tells 570 News.

“The Rangers are still in my blood.”

It’s only fitting that the longtime voice of the Rangers on 570 News returns for Don Cameron Potato Night on January 29th, hosted in partnership with the House of Friendship.

“Being from Prince Edward Island, the potato is king down there. The thing is, it’s such an important part of our diet, and it’s such an important part of our community,” says Cameron.

“It’s vitally important, and I think it’s vitally important for all of us, no matter what business we’re in, if we can help in the community, we must do so.”

When the Kitchener Rangers host the Windsor Spitfires, the team invites fans to bring potatoes to the game for the House of Friendship, with the goal of collecting 300,000 pounds by the end of the Potato Blitz.

This year marks the 21st annual Potato Blitz, and the 19th year the Rangers have been involved.

“I wasn’t even born yet when it started,” says Rangers forward Jake Henderson.

“That’s pretty impressive that it’s been going this long. It’s a great thing for the community, and a great thing to be involved in.”

“People can identify with it,” says Dawn Gill, development officer at the House of Friendship.

“It means supper, it means lunches, it means leftovers, it means food you can count on […] When we reach our goal of 300,000 pounds, we can guarantee a bag of potatoes in every food hamper we give out.”

John Neufeld, the executive director with the House of Friendship, says it serves another purpose, too:

“It also causes us to pause and ponder ‘Why do we have hunger in our community? We do some need the help and others don’t? How can we build a community where we can help each other belong?'”
