With all the rain, municipalities focus on keeping catch basins clear

With up to 40-mm of rain in the forecast on Wednesday, area municipalities are asking residents to keep a close eye on catch basins.

The basins are designed to take away the surface water and they don’t want them getting clogged up with debris, such as leaves.

Kitchener residents are asked to call the contact centre 519-741-2345 if they notice a problem area. For safety, they are discouraging residents from going out on the street and clearing the leaves themselves.

“…We’re very concerned about this and we want to make sure that homeowners and property owners aren’t affected.” said Mike Seiling, Director of Building with the City of Kitchener.

Seiling tells 570 News you should also make sure the downspouts on your eaves trough so that the water doesn’t end up in your basement.

Waterloo had crews out Tuesday clearing leaves in low lying areas more prone to flooding. They will be doing much of the same today as well.

“The one good thing about that is our equipment is out and about today…They’ll be ready to be deployed immediately if there are any areas that have any issues today.” said Roslyn Lusk, Waterloo’s Director of Transportation Services.

Waterloo residents can call 519-886-2310 to report any flooding.
