11:00 – Ottawa daycare – Vaccine-Free
Marie-Claude Turcotte, Manager of the Vaccine-Preventable Diseases program, Ottawa Public Health.
An Ottawa home daycare is promising a ‘vaccine-free environment’ for children. Public Health is not happy about it – and is speaking out. The husband and wife team say their daycare is designed for children who have not been vaccinated – and have chosen not to vaccinate their own daughter. Last month – we spoke with the Region of Waterloo Public Health about the importance of getting the shots, after a measles outbreak at Disneyland. Then, earlier this month – the issue hit closer to home – with four confirmed cases in Canada. Frustrated with the situation, author with the Globe and Mail, Andre Picard wrote an article called “Vaccinations are for the Greater Good” and joined the show to discuss. Now – as mentioned…we have the Ottawa story where parents are not only not vaccinating their child – but promoting a vaccine free environment at their daycare.
11:30 – Firefighter – Training death
Richard Hepditch, Chief, Waterloo Fire Department
A tragic story out of Hanover, where a Durham College firefighting student lost his life during a training session. Police say 30 year old Adam Brunt of Bowmanville died Sunday after he became trapped under the ice of the Saugeen River. He was one of 12 students in the class before he was caught in a strong current under the ice and remained submerged for about 15 minutes before he was finally pulled out. A post mortem was scheduled for Monday in London and the Ministry of Labour continues to investigate. According to sources, the 2 day training course is run by Herschel Rescue – and were reportedly involved in a similar incident 5 years ago where a 51 year old man died in an ice rescue training exercise near Sarnia. Locally, Waterloo Region has fire departments in Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge, Wilmot, Baden and Woolwich townships. This story got us thinking about what local training exercises are like – and how we can ensure safety is top of mind.
