OPP’s distracted driving blitz nets 2,000 charges province-wide

The OPP’s distracted driving blitz resulted in more than 2,000 charges across the province.

Between March 8th and 14th, OPP in the West Region alone charged 394 drivers with distracted driving, and 10 with careless driving.

The West Region includes Wellington, Norfolk, Brant, Huron and Perth counties.

“It’s safe to say it doesn’t discriminate. Anybody with a cellphone, regardless of age, tend to participate in that type of illegal behaviour when they’re driving” says OPP Sergeant Dave Rektor. “We really need to get the message out that it’s not safe, it’s extremely dangerous, as dangerous as impaired driving and work towards a complete reduction of it.”

This past Monday, the fine for distracted driving went up over $100 dollars to $280 dollars.

The Ontario Government also unveiled new legislation on Monday that could see drivers hit with three demerit points and fines of up to $1,000 for distracted driving.
