It’s set to be a critical night in Cambridge council chambers as the municipality hosts a public meeting for three pivotal projects.
On Tuesday, the City of Cambridge will host public delegations and presentations on a 40-storey tower proposed on King Street East in Preston, the Hespeler Road Secondary Plan, and the Preston Secondary Plan.
Starting with the tower, the city has received a proposal to build a 40-storey residential building in Preston at 210 King St. E., the site of the former Argyle Arms Pub.
The developer is looking to amend the zoning for the lot and the official community plan to accommodate a taller building than what’s currently allowed.
If approved, the build would bring 475 residential units and some commercial space at the base of the building.
The Hespeler Road Secondary Plan is a document that outlines priorities for the area that could transition the roadway from being speckled with brand-name box stores, gas stations, and fast food drive-thrus into an area that thinks transit-first.
Similarly, the Preston Secondary Plan offers insight into how the city will approach development in that part of the city in the coming years. There’s set to be a focus on high-density builds along King Street East, and a revitalization of Preston Town Centre.
The city will look to take advantage of the future light-rail connections by approving high-rise and high-density residential builds along Hespeler Road and in Preston in the coming years, with a focus on tall towers that offer commercial space along the street-level floors.
The meeting gets underway at 6:30 p.m.
