The appearance of the bright orange electric scooters has become another sure sign of spring in Waterloo Region, and they’re back on the roads as of April 9.
Neuron e-scooters first started showing up on the region’s roads four years ago as another option to help move people around the community, which was in line with environmental policies. During its 2025 recap, Neuron admitted there was a dip in ridership. But it attributed that to declining post-secondary enrollment due to the federal student visa cap.
Despite the decline, ridership numbers remained strong last season, and so did opinions about the service.
In a press release, Neuron said nine in ten riders believe Neuron e-scooters had a positive impact on the region by reducing traffic congestion, improving air quality and making it easier to get around.
Neuron said the program injected an estimated $3.1 million into the local economy and prevented around 13.5 tonnes of CO2 from entering the environment last year.
Returning this year are the upright tricycles and handcycles as part of the region’s micromobility program. This allows individuals with disabilities the chance to participate. Users of the adaptive vehicles are required to book ahead of time. That can be done through the Neuron website. The company says residents in Kitchener, Waterloo and Cambridge can reserve the vehicles 24 hours in advance.
There are regulations for all riders to be aware of that are particular to Waterloo Region. First and foremost, you must be 16 years of age or older to use a Neuron device.
A single trip on a Neuron scooter costs one dollar to unlock the vehicle and then $0.39 per minute. There is a Plus Pass available for 5-bucks which waives the unlock fee and discounts trips by 20 per cent.
