Flood watch added to yellow freezing rain warning for Waterloo Region

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

Icy precipitation is expected to affect travel on Thursday night.

A yellow warning for freezing rain was issued for Waterloo Region and surrounding areas.

Environment Canada says a low-pressure system will create rainfall later in the afternoon, which will change to freezing rain in the evening.

Up to 2 mm of ice build-up is possible, including on roads and sidewalks, which could become hazardous.

“Be very careful if walking or driving,” advised the weather agency. “If driving, turn on your lights, slow down and maintain a safe following distance.”

The freezing rain should taper off near midnight.

The precipitation on Thursday and warmer temperatures expected over the weekend has prompted the Grand River Conservation Authority to issue a Flood Watch for the entire Grand River Watershed.

It’s due to the increased risk of snowmelt, runoff and ice jam formation.

The forecast is calling for between 20 and 30 mm of rain over the next few days and Municipal flood coordinators are closely monitoring the conditions.

The GRCA said additional flood messaging will be issued as needed.
