Two separate vehicle thefts across the region, both involving transport trucks and both within hours of each other, have raised some red flags for Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS).
Officers said those two thefts took place in both Kitchener and North Dumfries, the first of which occurred in North Dumfries early Sunday morning, between 4:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m.
Calls came in from a local trucking business after it found that 3 of its freightline transport trucks, along with 2 trailers, had been stolen.
Reports state that multiple unknown suspects broke into the front gate of that business before they drove out with those transport trucks.
Police said that one of those trucks has since turned up outside of the region, but the remainder are still missing.
Then, later that same morning, more thefts were reported in Kitchener, centred around another transport truck.
This one was stolen from the area of Wabanaki Drive and Goodrich Drive, with officers saying a similar Freightliner transport truck and its trailer were taken.
Those vehicles have still not been recovered.
It’s led regional police to issue a few reminders for drivers and businesses, including:
- Block access to the onboard diagnostic port to prevent thieves from reprogramming the vehicle’s key fob. A simple device can be purchased online.
- Use a steering wheel locking device to deter theft.
- When not in use, place the vehicle key fob inside a radio frequency shielding bag or pouch to block signals.
- Consider equipping your vehicle with an aftermarket global positioning system (GPS) tracker to assist police in locating the vehicle and suspects.
- Ensure all keys are accounted for and never left in the vehicle or unattended.
Suspicious activity can always be reported to WRPS or to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. Both investigations remain ongoing.
