OPP officer ‘nearly lost their life’ at KCI fatal school bus crash scene

The OPP said an officer “nearly lost their life” while investigating the scene of this month’s school bus crash on Highway 401 that claimed the life of a driver on a Kitchener high school’s field trip.

The crash happened the morning of Nov. 2 in Middlesex County when two buses were taking students from Kitchener Waterloo Collegiate and Vocational School (KCI) to Point Pelee National Park.

Sgt. Ed Sanchuk said in a social media post that while police were investigating the crash, a driver “made a shocking and dangerous move,” going past the police barricades and “racing through the closed scene at a high speed, ignoring all warnings.”

Sanchuk said the oncoming vehicle struck police equipment and “missed hitting an officer by mere inches.”

He added, “This was extremely dangerous, where an officer nearly lost their life.”

Sanchuk said a second motorist then tried to force their way through the closure, striking a barrier.

Sanchuk said highway closure barriers “are not suggestions, they’re lifelines for first responders, and the public.”

He said the OPP would like to hear from anyone who knows anything about the vehicle that nearly struck the officer.

There was no update to the investigation into the bus crash itself, in which a school bus driver died, and four students from KCI were injured.
