Guelph man arrested following police stand-off

A man in the Royal City is facing a list of charges after firing a shotgun off inside a home in The Ward, leading to a two-hour stand-off with police.

Guelph police responded to calls from neighbours who reported a firearm being shot off inside a home near York Road and Harris Street at around 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Neighbours were told to shelter in place as officers with the Guelph Police Service Tactics and Rescue Unit contained the home.

After two hours of negotiation with the man, he was taken into custody without any reports of injuries. Police recovered a shotgun and about 50 rounds of ammunition.

The 50-year-old Guelph man was charged with careless use of a firearm, recklessly discharging a firearm, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose and unsafe storage of ammunition and held for a bail hearing.
