It was a tough night for the Kitchener Rangers Friday in Sault St. Marie, surrendering four unanswered goals to lose their second game in a row.
Kitchener scored three goals in the first period, including one from Jack LaBrash, his first of the season, and two from Cameron Arquette.
The Greyhounds scored their first of the night at 6:25 in the second to make it a two-goal game. Andrew MacNeil got the three goal lead back with his first career OHL goal shorthanded, making it 4-1 near the end of the period. Moments later, Marco Mignosa of the Greyhounds capitalized on the power play to cut the Rangers’ lead to 4-2.
From there, the Greyhounds went on to score two more goals in the second, from Travis Hayes and Chase Reid. The game winner was secured in overtime, making the final score 5-4 in favour of Sault St. Marie.
Friday’s loss comes after the Rangers were blanked 3-0 to the Flint Firebirds on Wednesday night.
Despite the loss, Cameron Arquette (two goals) and Haeden Ellis (three assists) came away with multi-point games, extending their team leading point totals to nine.
After the game, head coach Jussi Ahokas said the first period was the best the team played all season, but they took too many penalties.
“We just can’t take those,” he said. Some notable penalties included too many men at 0:37 of the second and a match penalty for Matthew Hlacar for a blindside hit at 17:18 later that period.
“Some of our guys have to kill too much and it takes away from our five-on-five game.”
The Rangers will have one more chance to get a win during their road trip as they take on the Saginaw Spirit on Saturday night.
