Food Bank CEO calls impacts from Canada Post strike ‘significant’

By Erin Anderson

The continuing Canada Post strike is causing concern for The Food Bank of Waterloo Region.

“This Canada Post strike is significant,” shared CEO Kim Wilhelm while on The Mike Farwell Show on Monday.

Wilhelm said 50 per cent of financial donations made to the local food bank in the last year were submitted through the mail.

“And that accounted for 60 per cent of our annual revenue,” she explained.

The food bank also traditionally mails out seasonal reminders this time of year, leading to an uptick in online donations, but that can’t happen right now because of the mail stoppage.

“So we’re really concerned about what this means,” Wilhelm said.

There’s still multiple ways to support The Food Bank of Waterloo Region during the mail stoppage, like making a donation online or calling them at 519-743-5576.

Non-perishable food items can also be donated through grocery store collection bins, or bring some along to next Monday’s K-W Oktoberfest Thanksgiving Day Parade.
