Driver struck while changing tire on Highway 401 in Cambridge

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are looking for a driver after a hit-and-run crash on Highway 401 through Cambridge early Wednesday.

OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said it happened around 12:30 a.m. as a male motorist stopped in a live lane of traffic to change a flat tire when he was struck by a passing vehicle.

Mirror debris was found at the scene and while the male was seriously hurt and taken to a trauma centre, he is expected to make a recovery and his injuries are not described as being life-threatening or life-altering.

The driver of the passing vehicle did not stop at the scene and OPP want to speak with them.

“It’s very unexpected that you would have a vehicle or a person standing in a live lane, but we just want to be able to have answers for everyone involved and make sure that this kind of situation does not happen again,” Schmidt said.

The crash itself happened on the eastbound side of Highway 401, between Hespeler Road and Franklin Boulevard.

The eastbound lanes of the highway were closed for nearly three hours for the investigation.

OPP are investigating and asking anyone with information to reach out to Cambridge OPP or Crime Stoppers.
