Customer, staff detain robbery suspect in Kitchener

An alleged robbery suspect is now in police custody thanks to the initiative of a shopper and staff in Kitchener.

It was on Sunday, around 8:50 p.m., when regional police responded to a reported robbery at a business in the area of Highland Road West in Kitchener.

According to reports, a man entered the store and concealed goods, attempting to leave without paying. The suspect was confronted by store staff and tried to flee the scene while threatening violence. Working with a customer, the staff were able to detain the robbery suspect until police arrived and took him into custody.

The suspect has since been identified as a 42-year-old man from Peel Region.

He’s since been charged with Robbery, and two counts of Breach of Court Order, as a result of the investigation.

The investigation is still ongoing – police are appealing to the customer who assisted those staff members, and any additional witnesses, to contact the investigators at 519-570-9777.
