The cones are up and the construction crews are out around Waterloo Region, as work begins on the final two locations for a roundabout safety pilot approved earlier this year.
The roundabout safety measures are for pedestrians specifically, with a few ideas being tested out. This includes raised crosswalks, flashing lights or a combination of both the raised crosswalks and flashing lights.
The summer drive will be impacted by the work which is now underway at all three locations at the roundabouts at Homer Watson Boulevard and Block Line Road (Kitchener), Franklin Boulevard and Bishop Street North (Cambridge), and Erb Street West and Ira Needles Boulevard/Erbsville Road (Waterloo).
All three locations involved will also feature improved lighting and curb and storm sewer upgrades for a total project budget ringing in just under $2.3 million.
The Cambridge and Waterloo projects just started this week.
Work in Kitchener at Homer Watson and Block Line began back in July, that location will test out just raised crosswalks. The region hopes construction will be wrapped up around mid-September.

In Cambridge at Franklin and Bishop, a different approach with flashing lights being installed. That will only take until the end of August to put in place.
Finally, in Waterloo, the drive to Costco at Erb and Ira Needles will be a bit slower as crews install both flashing lights and raised crosswalks until mid-September.
