Waterloo elementary school now closed until September 2027

A closed Waterloo elementary school released more information on when students will be able to return, and the timeline is longer than originally thought.

Elizabeth Ziegler Public School posted on its website that the school will stay closed until September 2027.

The school was shut down this past spring after a concrete slab fell from the front façade of the nearly 100-year-old building, prompting a full structural engineering investigation.

The first closure had students home around March Break, and then for another week, and then for the rest of the school year.

In June, the Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) released the findings of the structural engineering report, which found the school needed significant repairs but would not need to be demolished.

At that time, families were told students would be attending alternate schools for at least the 2025/26 school year.

And now, another extension to September 2027.

No budget or cost estimate for the repairs, which also include installing a new elevator in the school, has been released at this time.

In June, the WRDSB said it would be working with the Ministry of Education to “finalize the funding source” for the restoration.
