Wellesley passes bylaw that bans kite fighting

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

Kite fighting is no longer allowed in Wellesley.

Wellesley’s council has officially passed a by-law which prohibits all kite fighting on private and public property within the township.

“Kite fighting, while a popular tradition in many cultures, can be highly detrimental due to its serious safety, environmental, and social impacts,” read a release from the Township of Wellesley.

The township pointed to the abrasive coating that is attached to the kites’ strings for fighting, which it says can cause harm to people, livestock, road users, crops, and farming equipment.

Now that the by-law is in effect, anyone caught kite fighting in Wellesley could face a first-time fine of up to $5,000. Subsequent offences could result in fines up to $10,000 for individuals, while corporations could face fines ranging from $50,000 to $100,000.
