Applications open next week for late regional councillor’s seat

With heavy hearts, Regional Council officially declared the late Kari Williams’ seat for Kitchener vacant Wednesday night.

Williams passed away in April after a long battle with cancer.

Nearing midnight, councillors decided to fill the seat through appointment, and will be looking to the community for applicants.

After discussing numerous options for dates and times that would work for councillors on a busy summer schedule, a decision is expected to be made on August 14.

As per municipal guidelines, council has 60 days to make a decision.

Other options included holding a by-election, or filling the seat through direct nomination (councillors bring forward nominations for the role), or appointment through the previous election results from 2022.

Moving forward, anyone interested in joining regional council can keep an eye out for the posting from the region on July 2.

Applications would be accepted until 4 p.m. Aug. 1, with the final candidates announced on Aug. 6.

Council decided it would make a decision on Aug. 14.

Waterloo Mayor Dorothy McCabe was the only one to vote against the decision, noting she would not be able to attend that meeting.
