Centre in the Square, Langdon Hall among locations added to measles exposure list

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

More locations have been added to the Region of Waterloo’s list of potential public exposures to measles.

Among the new ones are Centre in the Square in Kitchener and Langdon Hall in Cambridge.

The timeframes of concern are 12:10 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on May 13 for Centre in the Square, and 5:50 p.m. to 11 p.m. on May 14 for Langdon Hall.

The timing of the exposure at Centre in the Square is when over a thousand children from multiple schools across the region were attending one of the SAMAJAM shows last Tuesday.

A statement from Region of Waterloo Public Health said, “We continue to work with our local school boards to determine the exposure and will communicate with affected student’s parents and staff.”

There’s also a new exposure associated with Franklin Public School in Kitchener for four days last week.

In regards to whether or not that exposure will mean the closure of the Kitchener school, WRDSB Associate Director, Business Services, Bill Lemon, provided a statement to 570 NewsRadio.

“We are committed to prioritizing safe and healthy school communities and we are thankful for the continued partnership with Region of Waterloo Public Health and the guidance they provide,” said Lemon. “We continue to work closely with Public Health to support next steps related to any possible exposures to measles in our school communities.”

It comes after two recent measles cases led to temporary closures at two Kitchener high schools, but they reopened Tuesday.

Region of Waterloo Public Health said each exposure is dealt with on a case-by-case basis and decisions are made in consultation with school boards to ensure safe operations for staff and students.

As of Wednesday, the list of potential exposure locations in Waterloo Region reached 65, including an advisory for Winterbourne Parochial Elementary School in West Montrose.

Among the 65 locations listed, roughly 66 per cent are in the City of Kitchener.

The list of potential exposures relating to public transit is unchanged at 12.
