EDITOR’S NOTE: An earlier version of this article incorrectly stated that Mike Morrice was the first Green MP elected outside of British Columbia.
With the federal election now in the rearview, the post-mortem has begun for candidates who lost their ridings as they look to what’s next.
Mike Morrice of the Green Party was defeated in Kitchener Centre by Conservative Kelly DeRidder on Monday. It was one of three ridings in Waterloo Region that flipped to the Tories.
Morrice was first elected in the 2021 federal election, becoming just the second Green MP elected to the House of Commons and the second Green MP elected outside of B.C. He also helped create the unique situation where both a federal and provincial riding were held by the Green Party. Aislinn Clancy was reelected as MPP in February.
Morrice told 570 NewsRadio, while he is disappointed by the outcome, he couldn’t be more proud of his time serving the people of Kitchener Centre.
“It is the privilege of a lifetime to have had the opportunity to serve our community as our MP. To be the person responsible for bringing voices from our community to Ottawa and for getting results for our community.”
He added, he’s felt nothing but gratitude.
As he looks back, Morrice said there is one thing that sticks out as a highlight of his term.
“Having the chance to put people above party and our community ahead of all the partisanship. I feel grateful for having had the chance to do that. Of course, I had hoped to continue doing that.”
He said the ethos of “people over party” is alive and well in Kitchener Centre.
“That’s what Aislinn Clancy continues to do as our Green MPP. It’s all she’s ever done is stay focused on lifting up voices from across our community when it comes to getting accountability on two-way all-day GO service, for example, that continues to need to be called for.”
Morrice was asked if he was planning on making another run at it. He said he’s going to take some time to rest and reflect but it’s too early now, to say if he will or not.
