Regional staff to look at options to help Fashion History Museum

Regional councillors have voted to help the Fashion History Museum (FHM) find a new location.

During Tuesday’s Administration and Finance Committee meeting, regional councillor Doug Craig introduced the motion to have staff look at options to help the museum.

“Therefore be it resolved that the appropriate regional staff be requested to report on options to help promote the collection by partnering with other museums in the region and or securing space in an appropriate regional building or commenting on the possibility of a new stand-alone structure to service the whole regional community,” reads the motion.

It ultimately passed by a slim vote of 8-7, with one absent vote. Councillors Craig, Wolf, Williams, Rodrigues, Shantz, Foxton, Nowak and Vrbanovic voted in favour.

Craig said it would be a “great loss” if the FHM left the region, calling it “unique.”

“I’m not asking council to commit to anything, I’m simply asking our staff look into possibilities working with FHM to see if there are other places that they could melt into in terms of presenting its collection and could be part of the regional community,” he continued.

The City of Cambridge terminated the lease for the FHM at their Queen Street building location back in March, with over $140,000 in unpaid rent dating back to June 2023. The city originally wanted them out by the end of March, but gave them an extension to May 19.
