‘Say yes’: Trio of Guelph golfers gifted dream trip to the Masters

A trio of young golfers from Guelph were gifted a dream on the green after a star-studded series of events took them from the University of Guelph all the way to the Masters.

Liam Fischer, Beck Ljungberg, and Caleb Patry are golf teammates at U of G known as the ‘Ontario Boys’. Their journey began when Patry won tickets to visit TPC Sawgrass, home of the Players Championship.

The young golfers drove all the way to Jacksonville, Fl. to take in the event, and were gifted the chance to play a round on the course. They were interviewed on ESPN, loaded up with gear, and even got the chance to meet one of their idols: Golf superstar Rory McIlroy.

“We were like, ‘Hey Rory, we drove 20 hours to see you, congrats on the victory down at the Players, that’s so awesome that could could get that done on such a big stage’, and he looks at us and goes, ‘Are you guys the Ontario boys?'” said Patry. “We were like ‘Oh my god, there’s no way you know who we are.'”

During an interview on ESPN, the Ontario Boys were asked if anything could top their experience at the Players, to which they joking replied with “going to the Masters.”

That’s when Listowel’s own professional golfer Corey Conners reached out to them. Conners gifted the trio tickets to Monday and Tuesday’s Masters events, an experience Ljungberg called “a fever dream.”

“It was just unreal,” said Patry. “He grew up an hour away from us. Obviously, he’s someone that we idolize. We can’t thank him enough for this opportunity.”

The Ontario Boys’ official motto is “say yes.”

The trio will now prepare to compete in the Canadian University/College Championship at Rivershore Golf Links in Kamloops, B.C. this June.

The Masters continues on Thursday, with Canadian Conners teeing off after 9 a.m.
