Sensory backpacks set to bring relief for lights, noises, crowds across Waterloo

By Justin Koehler

The City of Waterloo has introduced a new initiative working to bring new sensory backpacks to various facilities throughout the city.

It’s being done through the city’s Community Programming Inclusion Services, hoping they will bring some relief to those with sensory disabilities, sensitivities, or other needs.

“Public spaces can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially for those who experience challenges in filtering external stimuli such as bright lights, loud noises, and crowded areas,” said the City of Waterloo in a statement. “These backpacks offer a variety of tools to help individuals reduce or increase sensory input based on their needs.”

Some of those tools include sunglasses and noise-canceling headphones to reduce sensory input, fidget tools and a chair band to increase sensory input, along with timers and a drawing pad for self-regulation and communication.

The city said that while the 12 backpacks are primarily designed for those with disabilities or sensitivities, they are available to anyone 13 years of age or older and free to rent.

The 12 available sensory backpacks can be found at 6 locations, including:

  • Albert McCormick Community Centre
  • RIM Park Manulife Sportsplex & Healthy Living Centre
  • Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex and Community Pavilion
  • City of Waterloo Museum
  • Waterloo City Centre

They can be rented out “as long as needed during a visit,” but the city specifies they must remain within the given facilities at all times.

A full list of the city’s inclusionary services can be found on the City of Waterloo website.
