Quick turn from chaotic winter to mild spring day across Waterloo Region

By Justin Koehler

The region just finished battling through a winter day on Wednesday with freezing rain, snow, thunder, and lightning, causing plenty of disruptions in its wake.

It appears, though, that it will turn into summer-like conditions sooner rather than later.

The forecast is calling for a very mild Thursday across Waterloo Region, but it all kicks off with a fog advisory throughout, causing some potential slowdowns on roads throughout.

“It’s a lot quieter. Some showers this morning, then we’ll get into some clearing,” Jill Taylor, 570’s Meteorologist, said . “It will be quite mild too, the high near 17 C, not record breaking. The average high is about eight degrees, so we’re well above average.”

It comes as lingering flood warnings remain in effect through patches of the Grand River Watershed, also causing some issues for drivers in the Greater Toronto Area as portions of Highway 401 were flooded through the night.

Those dense fog patches that have carried over into the morning are expected to be cleared by gusting winds, reaching upwards of 70 km/h at times.

“The wind will be quite strong again out of the west southwest. If you are dealing with any fog or mist, that’ll dissipate as the wind will really pick up once again. Then we get into that very mild air,” said Taylor. “Temperatures will slowly rise through the morning and then down to nearly zero again tonight.”

Even with the mild day in the forecast, the wild start to April is not over quite yet. The forecast is currently calling for below-seasonal temperatures heading into Monday, with some possible snow for the region as well.

“This is the roller coaster ride of spring. We get summer-like conditions, winter-like conditions. Some people like to call it ‘sprinter;’ I guess you could refer to it that way. But it is a quieter weather day today, and it certainly is very mild and above average.”

It’s all the latest in a series of active weather for Waterloo Region, certainly not expected to wrap up in the near future.
