While surrounding communities brace for a potential ice storm this weekend, Waterloo Region is largely expecting rain — which has triggered a water safety message from the Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA).
The GRCA issued a watershed conditions statement on Friday afternoon as the incoming weather system is expected to bring 20 to 30 mm of rain to the Grand River watershed through Monday.
The wet weather, including the possibility of freezing rain, will lead to increased river flows and heighten the risk of flooding in low-lying areas.
No significant flooding is expected from the event but the GRCA says it will continue to monitor river conditions closely and any flood messages will be released as needed.
The public is being urged to use extreme caution around all waterways because of the hazards, like cold fast-moving water and slippery banks.
