Indigenous artists are being invited to submit artwork proposals to the Region of Waterloo.
The Region’s Reconciliation Action Partnership (RAP) has issued an open call to local Indigenous artists, graphic designers, and illustrators to create an original full-colour digital image.
The selected image will be utilized for an entire year starting Sept. 30, which is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
“Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history, and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process,” reads the web page for RAP’s Call for Artists.
The artwork will also be featured throughout Indigenous History Month in 2026. In addition to posters and digital media, the selected artist’s design would be used as a bus wrap for Grand River Transit.
The first Every Child Matters bus wrap was created in 2023 and the statement should be included in this year’s iteration.
As for eligibility, the RAP website sites: “The invitation is open to all emerging, mid-career and established artists (18+) of Indigenous ancestry living within Waterloo Region.”
The deadline for applications is 11:59 p.m. on May 5 and the selected artist will be paid $5,000 for their work.
