Hundreds protest Catholic school board meeting discussing Pride flag ban

Hundreds came out to the Waterloo Catholic District School Board (WCDSB) meeting last night to protest a plan that could ban Pride flags at all schools, outside and in the buildings.

Activist and politician, Brooklin Wallis, tells 570 NewsRadio that between 300 and 500 people came out in opposition to the motion on the agenda.

The motion about the flags argues that only the Ontario and Canadian flags should be allowed on flag poles, or to be seen inside schools, because those flags represent everyone.

Wallis said people were singing and chanting outside the meeting.

Photos from the outdoor protest rally show people making chalk drawings on the sidewalk on Weber Street, and carrying signs with messages like, “WCDSB, do not choose cruelty,” and “I teach that love is love,” and “Pope Francis welcomes us, shouldn’t you?”

Wallis said only a handful of people were able to get inside for the meeting.

570 NewsRadio has reached out to the WCDSB for comment on how the meeting went, but has not received any at this time.

A final vote on the motion is not expected until April 28.
