Sold-out crowd takes over Elmira for Women’s Hockey Championship final

Thousands of hockey fans of all ages poured into the Woolwich Memorial Centre in Elmira this weekend for the U SPORTS Women’s Hockey Championship.

The gold medal game saw the home crowd come out in droves to support the Waterloo Warriors, taking on the Bishop Gaiters.

The Gaiters were cheered on by a sea of purple with over 200 fans making the eight hour trip to Waterloo Region from Sherbrooke, Quebec, about two hours east of Montreal.

Purple pride held strong as Bishop won the National title with a 3-0 win over Waterloo.

The silver medal is still a big finish for the Black and Gold, marking the first medal ever for the Warriors in U-Sports women’s hockey, who finished fourth last year.

A sold-out crowd of around 1,500 fans including students, alumni, fans and hockey teams from across Waterloo Region were in attendance for the gold medal game.
