Police say 11-year-old boy is responsible for recent threat against Guelph school

A child in Guelph received a stern talking to from police after it was determined the youth was responsible for a phone threat last week, leading to the evacuation of an elementary school.

On Friday, Waverley Public School was evacuated because of a threatening message that was left on the school’s voicemail.

Staff and students were sent to another nearby school while officers search the area. They ultimately cleared the scene when nothing suspicious was located.

Guelph police have since determined the phone number used to leave the voicemail belonged to a local teen, who was with his family visiting friends when the threatening call was made.

It’s alleged the teen was playing video games when he overheard an 11-year-old boy using his phone to leave the message.

“The child then asked if it was possible to retrieve and delete the voicemail,” read the update from the Guelph Police Service.

Officers spoke to the boy, along with his mother, to explain the seriousness of the threat but no charges were laid due to the youth’s age.
