GRT sees dip in ridership in 2024

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

After a record-breaking year for ridership in 2023, Grand River Transit (GRT) is reporting a slight slump in 2024.

A year-end report from GRT showed there were 25.7 million riders last year, which is down from the almost 26.4 million riders in 2023. It represents a dip of 2.5 per cent.

It wasn’t a consistent trend though as the start of 2024 started off strong with record-breaking numbers up until June. The biggest decrease was recorded in September and the transit agency said that coincided with “notable changes” in student populations.

GRT also noted that in July, it increased its transfer window from 90 minutes to 120 minutes.

While ridership totals went down, service hours increased by 10 per cent and on-time performance rose by 8 per cent.

One record that was broken in 2024 was a record low for undelivered MobilityPlus trips at 2.45 per cent, and a total of 173,037 MobilityPLUS trips were delivered.

In 2025, Grand River Transit is looking at ways to boost September ridership, improve more routes, and enhance the bus platform at Conestoga.
