Regional outside workers will be in legal strike position Monday

A potential labour disruption could begin in Waterloo Region next week.

The union representing outside workers for the Region of Waterloo says its members will be in a legal strike position on Monday, March 3.

The CUPE 1656 members provide a number of regional services, including regional road maintenace, airport services, and landfill services.

The Region of Waterloo says if a strike takes effect, the regional landfill and recycling centres in Waterloo and Cambridge will be closed to the public.

The union put out a statement on Feb. 25, taking aim at regional council.

“Waterloo Regional Council lied to us,” read the statement. “We are currently in negotiations with Waterloo Regional Council. They offered us higher wages one day, and then took back their offer the next.”

The Region of Waterloo also issued a statement about the negotiations and potential disruptions.

“We continue to work closely with CUPE and are committed to reaching an agreement that is competitive for workers and affordable for residents.”
