Region enters day five of snow events, but spring preview on the way

By Justin Koehler

It’s officially day five of snow events for Waterloo Region, with cleanup still underway after the wall of winter weather slammed into the area over the weekend.

Snow events are still in effect throughout much of the cities, with significant weather events in place for Kitchener, Cambridge, and Waterloo until further notice. Parking bans go hand-in-hand with those events, as cities remind drivers they could face tickets, fines, or even be towed if they are parked on the streets.

Guelph police said in a social media post on X that officers have already responded to three separate collisions in 20 minutes across the Thursday morning commute, so make sure to drive with caution on those roads.

Thursday is still expected to be a wintery day, with approximately a couple of centimetres of snow in the forecast, with temperatures hitting highs of -9 C and wind chills making it feel closer to -19 C.

“It’ll be very cold for today and tomorrow morning,” said 570 Meteorologist, Jill Taylor. “A very cold start Friday morning, but it will get warmer through the day. High of -5 C on Friday, -4 C on Saturday, and Sunday -2 C.”

Luckily though, Taylor said there is a bit of good news on the horizon, with a gradual increase in temperatures heading into and through the weekend.

“We’ll see some improvement. A very cold start Friday morning, but it will get warmer through the day,” mentioned Taylor. “Then, how does this sound? It could hit 4 C by the time we get to Monday. Above freezing Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, then it’s back into the deep freeze. The mild spell is not going to last long.”

It’s not all good news though as there is a chance of flurries nearly every single day lasting into next week and Taylor said the region will be back to seasonal temperatures, meaning below the freezing mark, heading into next weekend.

Keep those shovels handy and make sure to still wear those extra layers, but get ready to enjoy that February thaw when it arrives. Spring is officially just one month away, but Waterloo Region is still in store for plenty of winter weather before March rears its head.
