Local CFL fans will have a chance to see Canadian football’s top prize in Waterloo.
Tyson Hergott, a defensive lineman with the Toronto Argonauts, and Waterloo native, will be at Morty’s Pub with the Grey Cup on Saturday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Fans will have a chance to have their picture taken with the cup and speak with the CFL champion.
Steve Campbell, co-owner of Morty’s Pub, said Saturday’s event will be a great opportunity for fans to come out and celebrate Canadian football.
“Waterloo’s a small town, but there are a ton of CFL lovers out there,” said Campbell. “There are a lot of kids out there who have never been able to see the Grey Cup. So this is a great opportunity to come on in and figure out what they are working for because a lot of kids want to go pro someday.”
Campbell said it will be first come first serve during Saturday’s event.
Hergott grew up in Waterloo and played high school football at St. David’s Catholic School. Earlier this week, he had a chance to visit his old stumping grounds and spoke with students and staff about his journey to the CFL.
“Having Tyson bring the Grey Cup to St. David’s is such an honour for our community. It’s a testament to the hard work and determination he’s shown throughout his career,” said principal Pat Eby in a press release. “He’s an incredible role model for our students.”
Hergott went on to play for the University of Waterloo Warriors from 2019 to 2023. When he was there, he was named to the U Sports First Team All-Canadian and OUA Lineman of the the Year in 2023.
He was drafted by the Argos 24th overall in the third round of the 2024 CFL Draft. During this past season, he played 15 games and recorded two defensive tackles and seven special teams tackles.
Toronto defeated the Winnipeg Blue Bombers back in November to win the 111th Grey Cup.
