Waterloo Regional Police are seeing a sharp spike in porch pirates.
The police service says last year, there were 448 porch thefts reported; up from 399 incidents in 2023.
“When it comes to ‘porch thefts’ or property thefts in general, it is important to still report it to the police,” said Constable Chris Iden with the Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS).
Sometimes, people don’t notify police when a package is stolen from their doorstep.
Iden said the data is helpful for crime analytics and investigations.
“This information is used to map out what areas of the region are impacted by specific crimes and allows our service to strategize,” wrote Iden. “Having multiple reports can also assist in finding linked occurrences or trends.”
If you are the victim of a porch theft, you can either report the incident online on WRPS’ website or by calling their non-emergency phone line, 519-570-9777.
