Doon village project ‘on time and budget’: Opening planned for summer 2026

A report coming to a Region of Waterloo committee next week will provide an update into the future of a place that explores the past.

The Doon Heritage Village has been closed since 2023. The historical site has been undergoing significant construction and repairs over that time through the Reimagining Doon Heritage Village project.

The village simulates what people in Waterloo Region lived like in 1914 through costumes and set pieces. Through community consultation, the region learned about some important pieces of history that were left out of that narrative.

The nearly 500 people who were engaged with through the process noted a lack of diverse stories, and the village will look to share the stories of local Indigenous Peoples and highlight the area’s connection to the natural environment.

For the infrastructure upgrades at the village $1.5 million was budgeted, and as of the beginning of 2025, the project is well on its way to coming in on-budget. So far, the contractors working on the upgrades at the village have billed the region for $500,000.

The work, including a watermain extension, building repairs, and electrical upgrades, is expected to be completed by early this year.

The Doon Heritage Village is set to host a grand reopening in the summer of 2026.
