Snow, icy roads cause dozens of collisions on Hwy. 401 through Mississauga

Early morning commuters were slipping and sliding through Mississauga on Highway 401 on Tuesday.

Dozens of vehicles, including several transport trucks, were involved in a flurry of collisions on Highway 401 in both directions between the Winston Churchill Boulevard exit and the Dixie Road exit through Mississauga from around 6 a.m. to 8 a.m.

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said a band of snow passed through the area at around 6 a.m. leading to hazardous road surfaces and a surprise for morning commuters.

“Sometimes it’s just that little bit of weather that can really change the driving conditions,” he said in a post on X. “Always be aware of road conditions, weather conditions. Drive accordingly.”

According to the OPP, no serious injuries were reported as a result of the collisions.

The police service is working on removing all disabled vehicles from the roadway and reopening all lanes through that stretch of highway.
