Region, Guelph welcome in two baby girls on New Year’s Day

By Justine Fraser

New Year’s Day was celebrated in local hospitals with the arrival of two new baby girls. The first babies born in 2025 locally also made two new pairs of first-time parents.

The region’s first baby of the year was born just after midnight at 12:19 a.m. to Pawan and Anupriya Singh. Baby Singh is still in the process of being named but came in at seven pounds, six ounces and 52 cm in length.

The tired, new father took some time to talk to 570 NewsRadio after a long and painful labour. Singh mentioned that they originally went to the hospital for contractions on Dec. 30 but were told by doctors to go home to wait longer as Anupriya was only a couple of centimetres dilated.

“It was our first baby, so we didn’t have any experience about the contractions and the pain,” he said.

As the pain became more intense the Singhs returned to the hospital the next day. After a long day of labour pains, the doctors at Grand River Hospital decided that Anupriya was too exhausted and induced labour. She gave birth shortly after.

“Everything went very well – the doctors and nurses here were very supportive and very helpful,” mentioned Singh.

He confirmed that both mom and baby are happy or more importantly, healthy. He’s just waiting to get the call they can come home.

“It was amazing, it feels good and grateful that it came on New Year’s Eve.”

Over in Guelph another pair of new parents welcomed in a baby girl for 2025.

Guelph General Hospital received the first baby of 2025 around 12:52 a.m. making Holly and Jay MacCallum parents of baby Emilia who came in weighing seven pounds, five ounces.
