Snow squall watch in effect for Waterloo Region

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

A snow squall watch is currently in effect for Waterloo Region, expected to last into the evening and possibly into Sunday.

Environment Canada first issued a winter weather travel advisory for the region on Friday, but it was later replaced by a snow squall warning.

The weather authority said the squalls were expected to redevelop Friday night, carrying into Saturday morning.

“Snow squalls are expected to move back into the region this evening and may become stationary for several hours,” the warning reads. “Changes from clear skies to heavy snow within just a few kilometres are common.”

Snowfall accumulations of 15 to 20 cm are possible by Saturday afternoon, when the system is expected to shift north.

Environment Canada officials note travel could be hazardous this weekend because of all the snow.

Heavy snowfall Wednesday night, which saw around 15 cm of snowfall in Waterloo Region, led to snow events issued in Kitchener, Waterloo and Cambridge.
