In like a lion: Will January continue to be cold and snowy?

With December now squarely in the rearview mirror, it’s time to check out what the forecast looks like to kick off 2025.

Much like last month, January is expected to see some temperature swings and its fair share of snowfall.

Environment Canada, meteorologist, Trudy Kidd told 570 News Radio there is nothing in the forecast to suggest this month is going to be anything more than typical.

“It’s pretty close to the regular temperature that we would have seen over the last thirty years, which is -6.3 C. But, if you compare it to different years, when we’ve had some pretty warm Januarys, this one will feel cooler.”

Kidd said the temperature last month was slightly below average and that trend should continue. She also said the swings in temperature will continue but that too is fairly typical for Ontario this time of year.

When it comes to snowfall or precipitation, Kidd said those numbers are a little harder to nail down.

“Typically, we see 66.3 mm of precipitation (in January). Chances are we’ll get near that, however, it’s really tough with these snow squalls.”

Kidd said those in an area prone to snow squall activity can expect higher amounts of accumulation, this includes Waterloo Region.

Overall, Kidd is expecting January 2025 to fall pretty much in line with seasonal averages.
